Uncovering the creative talent of tomorrow
Empowering the next generation of Black creative leaders through hands-on mentorship and resources.
THE CHALLENGE
Despite the wealth of talent within the Black creative community, systemic barriers often prevent young creators from accessing the high-level production skills and industry networks needed for sustainable careers. YouTube partnered with Livity and Google to launch a multi-year 'Film School' initiative designed to bridge this gap, moving beyond surface-level representation to mastery.
Multi-year talent incubator for Black creative leaders
Professional placement into high-end production roles
Direct technical agency through hardware and studio access
THE CULTURAL TRUTH
For Black creators, the 'participation gap' isn't about a lack of creativity; it's about a lack of access to the same resources, hardware, and professional mentorship as their peers. To drive real change, a brand must stop acting as a gatekeeper and start acting as an accelerator.
THE CO-CREATION
We didn't just design a curriculum; we built an incubator. Over two years, we selected cohorts of emerging Black creators to undergo intensive training in everything from cinematography and post-production to audience development and business strategy.
By pairing them with industry mentors and providing the social utility of high-end equipment and studio space, we ensured the creators were the co-authors of their own professional evolution. The programme was designed to be immersive, with creators working on live briefs and receiving direct feedback from Google and YouTube's top creative teams.
THE IMPACT
The Film School has become a blueprint for how global platforms can invest in long-term equity. By the end of the two-year programme, participants hadn't just produced award-winning content; they had built a self-sustaining network of collaborators. We proved that when you invest in the technical agency of young Black creators, you don't just diversify a platform, you future-proof the creative economy.
